Meet OC Momprenuers Slash OC Gold Diggers

Momprenuers..We love them...We admire them...We want to know more about them! OC Mom Mag has found these very clever business woman slash Moms. Meet – Jennifer McGuire founder and President of OC Goldiggers, and Lauran Roberson co-founder and Vice President.

Q: Tell us a little about OC Goldiggers: The OC Goldiggers are two moms that came upon an opportunity that was popular in the Midwest, but had not reached the Southern California area. With the price of gold at an all-time high, the concept of purchasing unwanted gold, i.e. broken chains, class rings, etc. seemed to be a great way to make money. Turning it in to a party seemed like the perfect idea.

Q: When did you start this business? We started up our business in June 2008

Q: How did you come up with this business? Jennifer was talking on the phone to her sister-in-law, who lives in the Midwest, as she was preparing to host a Gold Party. She was, immediately, very interested in the idea, as she knew that these parties were not prominent in the Orange County area. She talked, extensively, with the party specialist in Michigan, and began the research etc. on how to bring this business to Orange County

Q: Did you start this before the big cash for gold craze? Yes we did. As a matter of fact, for a good 6 months, we were just about the only ones out there doing this. Our first year was crazy. We would sometimes book 3 gold parties in a day. One in the morning, then the afternoon and then the evening. It was so much fun.

Q: How do you balance business and family? Our families are very important to the both of us. Jennifer has three boys, all in sports, so it was very important for her to be able to still attend all of their football games. Lauran's youngest is 10 and is very involved in soccer, so we would always make sure that we booked parties around our kids activities. We became very clever at doing this. Some of our best parties were in the afternoon from 11:00 – 1:00. All the moms would get together for a light lunch and sell their gold, make some good money and then go pick up the kids from school. We were always home in time to be there for our kids as well.

Q: What is your favorite part of this business? Flexibility first and then the thought that we are making a lot of people happy. The look on most people’s faces when you tell them how much they have just earned is priceless. We have had some ladies in tears because money has been so tight for everyone that what we give them makes a big difference.

Q: Tell us how it works? (Explain the gold party and how an interested person would have a party and what takes place at the party) Hosting a gold party is so easy. We book our parties in two hour increments. We arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the party and all we require is a table with good lighting. We start by assessing the guest's gold. The higher the karatage, the more we pay. After determining the karatage, we weigh the gold and pay, based on the price ot gold that day. After adding it all up, we write the guest a check and he/she leaves the party WITH money. Many people call it the "perfect party"

Q: Love the name! Who came up with it? Lauran came up with the name. Much to our family’s dismay. They didn’t think that being a gold digger was appropriate for their moms, but of course, we thought it fit perfectly with what we were doing.

Q: Where do you see OC Goldiggers 2 years from now? Well, as the market continues to get saturated with so many other gold buyers, we are now considering looking outside of California, but for now, we continue to hold on to our reputation as being the highest paying gold buyers in the business. You have to be careful with the larger companies that are doing all those television ads. They say they pay the most, but how would you know? We actually sent in gold that we had assessed ourselves and would have paid out $206.00 for, to one of the larger gold buying businesses. They sent us a check for $36.01. Yikes. That just gives you an idea of what is going on out there.

Q: Best advice you can give to moms who work? Be sure that you are doing something that you really enjoy. Happy mommy, happy family.

Q: Anything else you'd like to share with OC Mom's. Raising a family is no easy task and working, on top of that, can make for a stressful home life. We have learned by reentering the work force that the key to happiness is balance. You have to make time for yourself, stay in touch with friends, and most of all, embrace every moment with your family. Time passes too quickly.
