Junk mail is a huge waste of paper -- and an annoyance. How can I reduce the amount I get?

By Jen Boulden

Luckily, though, it takes only a few minutes to eliminate your family’s influx of junk mail. First, go to the Web site DMAchoice.org to register with the Direct Marketing Association’s “Do Not Mail List.” (It can take a month or two for marketers to take you off lists, so you may receive some junk mail in the interim.)

Next, call stores that send you catalogs you don’t want and ask that they remove you from mailing lists. Catalog companies tend to buy and sell your name most frequently, and they generate the most waste.

Finally, call 1-888-5OPT-OUT or go to the Web site, OptOutPreScreen.com to stop unwanted credit card offers. I did it myself two years ago and haven’t gotten a single offer since!
